KZW 20 – the universal 2-ton class
For pre-roping, calibration, and mixed cable pulls up to 20 kN – as a sled, on a trailer, or on a crawler.
The KZW 20 is the 2-ton class of Jost cable pull winches. It is designed for universal use with a variety of cable sections and is specifically intended for fiber-optic cable installation. The winch itself is the same across all models – they differ in how they are transported to the job site: as a skid, on a road-legal trailer, or on a crawler vehicle.
Your benefits at a glance
20 kN, hydraulically variable – The 2-ton class continuously adjusts speed and pulling force to suit the task.
Universal for small to medium cable sections – Designed for pre-roping and calibration work, as well as for cable and fiber-optic installation.
Open capstan – The open capstan allows for flexible rope pulls and the use of rope connectors.
Control and tensile data, standard features – radio remote control, tensile force and length display, traction force limitation, and data logging via the control unit – the cable tensioning process is controlled and documented.
Passive protection against rope break – A man-high, hot-dip galvanized steel mesh with foot and shin protection shields the operator. The aerodynamic tarpaulin cover shields against sun and weather and is also an integral part of the passive protection against the effects of rope break.
Three versions
The right model depends on the intended use and access to the work site.
As a sled
The KZW 20 is also available as a compact sled-mounted winch. Its sturdy frame chassis can be positioned directly at the job site – anywhere where access, space, or ground conditions make a trailer impractical. Where there are no roads, a helicopter can fly the winch directly to the site.
Key figures
- Pulling force: 20 kN (2 t)
- Drive: hydraulic, continuously variable; with radio remote control
- Machine dimensions (L × W × H): 153 × 90 × 110 cm
- Weight of machine without rope: 500 kg
- Pull rope, Standard Reel No. 5:
- Steel rope, 8 mm diameter × 700 m
- Fiber rope, 6 mm diameter × 1,200 m
- Engine:
- Standard: 13 kW (18 hp) gasoline engine
- Option: 14.7 kW (20 hp) diesel engine with particle filter
On a trailer
The KZW 20 is transported to the construction site on a sturdy, road-approved trailer capable of speeds up to 100 km/h. An aerodynamic tarpaulin cover protects the load in the event of a rope break, as well as from the sun and the elements.

On a tracked undercarriage
Thanks to its crawler tracks, the winch can travel off-road or into tight construction sites – it’s compact, quick to load, and can operate even where there is no permanent access road. The drive system uses the vehicle’s engine.

Drive, Control, and Safety
The hydraulic, continuously variable drive adjusts speed and pulling force to suit the task at hand; the hydraulically released brake holds the load in place. The reel with free wheeling ability allows the rope to be extended without using the motor, and the coiler is changed using a lifting plate.
The control unit detects the cable pull; the pull data is output via a USB flash drive. The system includes a swivel cable intake and a brake for lowering the rope through the capstan under load.
Advice and next steps
The KZW 20 is the mid-range model in Jost’s cable pull winch series. If the pulling force is insufficient, the larger models up to 3 t and 4 t and above are available; the KZW 10 is suitable for lighter cable pulling tasks. Jost will determine which scope of delivery and equipment are best suited to your installation task during a technical consultation. The data sheet is available for download.
