KZW 30 and 40 – the class for underground and overhead lines
For heavy underground and overhead cable pulls up to 40 kN – available as the KZW 30 (3 t) or KZW 40 (4 t).
The KZW 30/40 is the largest class of Jost cable pull winches – the next step up from the 2-ton class when its pulling force is no longer sufficient. It pulls underground and overhead cables; a hydromechanically controlled back pull and a hydraulic anchor support maintain tension and stability during heavy-duty pulling. Both models are identical in construction – same series, same data sheet; they differ in pulling force class: KZW 30 up to 30 kN (3 t), KZW 40 up to 40 kN (4 t).
Your benefits at a glance
30–40 kN, hydraulically variable – This high-performance model pulls underground and overhead cables and continuously adjusts speed and pulling force to suit the task.
Hydraulic reel change – Hydraulic reel change mechanism – the rope reel can be changed quickly and with minimal effort.
Open capstan – The open capstan allows for flexible rope pulls and the use of rope connectors.
Control and train data, standard features – radio remote control with traction force and length display, plus traction force limitation and data logging via the control unit.
Passive protection against rope break – A man-high, hot-dip galvanized steel mesh with foot and shin protection shields the operator. The aerodynamic tarpaulin cover keeps out the sun and the elements and is also an integral part of the passive protection against the effects of rope break.
Three versions
The right model depends on the required pulling force, the motorization, and the terrain.
KZW 30
The 3t model is designed for underground and overhead cable pulling applications with a pulling force of up to 30 kN. It is suitable for medium-duty pulling tasks. The KZW 30 and KZW 40 are based on the same series.

- Pulling force: 30 kN (3 t)
- Drive: hydraulic, continuously variable; with radio remote control
- Dimensions (L × W × H): 447 × 171 × 205 cm
- Weight without reel and rope: 1,880 kg
- Total weight: 2,500 kg
- Haul rope:
- Steel rope, 10 mm diameter × 1,200 m
- Engine: 25.5 kW (35 hp) gasoline engine
- Trailer: road-legal, approved for speeds up to 100 km/h
KZW 40
The 4t model is designed for heavy-duty underground and overhead line pulling applications with a pulling force of up to 40 kN. It offers greater pulling force but remains the same in terms of design, operation, and controls.
Key figures
- Pulling force: 40 kN (4 t)
- Drive: hydraulic, continuously variable; with radio remote control
- Dimensions (L × W × H): 447 × 171 × 205 cm

KZW 40-R2500 on a crawler chassis
The tracked version of the KZW 40 can travel off-road on its own. It is used in situations where access, ground conditions, or space constraints make it impossible to use a trailer and tow vehicle.
Key figures
- Pulling force: 40 kN (4 t)
- Drive: hydraulic, continuously variable; with radio remote control
- Dimensions of the crawler (L × W × H): 278 × 149 × 210 cm
- Weight without reel and rope: 2,500 kg
- Total weight: 3,050 kg
- Haul rope:
- Steel rope, 11 mm diameter × 1,000 m
- Engine:
- Diesel engine with particle filter and active regeneration, 18.9 kW (25.7 hp)
- Trailer: towable, approved for speeds up to 80 km/h (optional)
Drive, back pull, and equipment
The hydraulic, continuously variable drive adjusts speed and pulling force to suit the task at hand; a hydraulically released brake holds the load. For heavy ground and overhead line pulling, the hydraulic support ensures a firm footing, while the hydromechanically controlled counter-pull clutch regulates the even preload on the coiler. The sound-insulated diesel engine – a Hatz diesel with “Silent Pack” – keeps noise levels low. The reel is changed using a hydraulic changing device – the cable reels can be changed quickly and with minimal effort.
The registration data is output via a USB flash drive; the digital camera with video feed on the control panel ensures monitoring of the cable shaft. Various reel configurations accommodate both pre-roping and main rope operations.
Advice and next steps
The largest class of Jost cable pull winches covers the 3- to 4-ton range. For lighter tasks, the 2-ton class and the compact small winch are available; where emission-free operation is required, the battery-powered KZW 25 E is available in this class; where the standard range is insufficient, Jost builds custom special winches. Jost will determine which model and which features are best suited to your installation task during a technical consultation.
